CHAPTER 3: FROM LOGOTHERAPHY TO IKIGAI

Logotheraphy helps you to find reasons to live. Logotheraphy pushes patients to consciously discover their life’s purpose in order to confront their neuroses. According to logotheraphy, discovering one’s purpose in life helps an individual fill that existential void. It deals with conflicts when and where they arise (spiritual dimension).

Key ideas of logotheraphy are:

- We don’t create meaning of our life, we discover it.

- Humour can help break negative cycles and reduce anxiety.

- We all have capacity to do noble or terrible things. The side we end up depend o our situation depends on our decision, rather than our situations.

MORITA THERAPY focuses on teaching patients to accept their emotions without trying to control them, since their feelings will change as result of actions. It teaches us to accept our desires, anxieties, fears, and worries, and let them go rather than eliminating symptoms.

The basic principle of Morita therapy

1. Accept your feelings- If you observe a thought you should not try to control them or get rid of them. If you do, they will become more intense. We don’t create our feelings; they simply come to us. The trick is welcoming them.

2. Do what you should be doing - We shouldn’t focus on eliminating symptoms, because recovery will come on its own. We should focus on present moment, and we should avoid intellectualising the situation. It allows you to learn from your actions and activities rather than providing them explanations.

3. Discover your life’s purpose - We should have a clear sense of our purpose, and always keep asking yourself: “ what do we need to be doing right now? What action we should be taking ?”

In order to stop identifying others as cause of your problem, deepen the sense of responsibility by asking the following questions :

1. What have I received from person X?

2. What have I given to person X?

3. What problem have I caused person x?

Logotheraphy and Morita therapy are grounded in the mission of finding your ikigai. The idea is to reenter society as new person, with sense of purpose , and without being controlled by social and emotional pressure.
