HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

In order to visual end in mind begin with thinking about the following :

1. Visualize in rich detail your own funeral. Who is there? What are they saying about you? About how you lived your life? About the relationships you had? What do you want them to say? Think about how your priorities would change if you only had 30 more days to live. Start living by these priorities.

2. Define what scares you – find they ways you would handle them

3. Break down different roles in your life- whether as a student, son, parent and write down goals you want to achieve in all roles.

ALL THINGS ARE CREATED TWICE

“Begin with end in mind” is based on principle that all things are created twice. Theirs is mental creation first, then physical creation to all things. To begin with end in mind means to start with clear understanding of your destination. The unique human capacities of self-awareness, imagination enable us to examine first creations, make it possible to write our own script.

A PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

The most effective way to begin with the end in mind is to develop a personal mission statement. It focus on what you want to be (character) and to do (achievements) and on the values upon which your doing will be based. Once you have that sense of mission, the values which direct your life, you have set your long term and short term goals, your energies can be measured effectively.

ALTERNATIVE CENTERS

A PRINCIPLE CENTER

By centering our lives on correct principles, we create a solid foundation for development of the four life support factors. The principles don’t change; our understanding of them does. We are free to choose our actions, but we are not free to choose the consequences of those actions. By centering our lives on principles, we create a fundamental paradigm of effective living. It is the center that pulls all other centers in perspective.

A paradigm is like a pair of glasses; it affects the way you see everything in your life. If you are a principle-centered person you will stand apart from your emotion and would evaluate the possible implications of various decisions and try to come up with best solution.

Important differences of principle centered paradigm:

1. You are not being acted upon by other people or circumstance.

2. Your decision is most effective because it is based on long term result.

3. What you choose to do contributes to your values in life.

4. You’ll feel comfortable about your decision. Whatever you choose to do, you can focus on it or enjoy it.

5. You make decision consciously and knowledgably.

WRITING AND USING A PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

”You can detect rather than invent our missions in life. Writing a mission statement changes you because it forces you to think through your priority deeply, and to align your behavior with your belief. It may take several weeks to produce it in final form. Through personal mission statement we begin to give expression of what we want to do and want to be in our lives.

USING YOUR WHOLE BRAIN

The left hemisphere of brain is more logical/verbal and the right hemisphere of brain is more intuitive, creative one. One side of the brain generally tends to dominate in each individual. We live in primarily left dominant world, where words and measurement and logic are enthroned, and the more creative, artistic aspect of our nature. Your creative right brain is important in creating personal mission statement and integrating your life.

TWO WAYS TO TAP THE RIGHT BRAIN

Through right brain capacity we will be able to visualize, present circumstance, project a holistic picture in a better way.

1. Expand perspective - Through using your imagination that can put you in touch with your values.

2. Visualization and Affirmation- A good affirmation has five basic ingredients it’s personal, it’s positive, it’s visual, it’s in present tense and it’s emotion.

For example:-“I (personal) respond (present tense) with wisdom, love and self-control (positive) when my children misbehave.”

The higher use of imagination helps to create a life of contribution and unique purpose

IDENTIFING ROLES AND GOALS

We each have a number of different roles in life – In which we have responsibilities. You will find your mission statement more balanced if you break down into specific role areas of your life and accomplish your goals.

An effective goal focuses on results rather than activity. These roles and goals will provide foundation for effective goal setting.

FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT

Family mission statement becomes the criteria for evaluation and decision making. When individual values are harmonized with family, members work together for common purpose. It becomes the framework for thinking, for governing family.

ORGANISATIONAL MISSION STATEMENT

For developing effective mission statement everyone in the organization needs to participate in meaningful way. An organization mission statement truly reflects the deep shared vision and values of everyone—creates unity and commitment.
